Kevin Weekes had little to do in the first period, then was overwhelmed in the second. He didn’t make it off the bench for the third. Michal Rozsival and Nikolai Zherdev scored during two-man advantages in New York’s four-goal second period, and the Rangers routed Weekes and the Martin Brodeur-less New Jersey Devils 5-2 on Wednesday night.

Ottawa Senators forward Jarkko Ruutu was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL on Wednesday for catching Montreal’s Maxim Lapierre with an elbow. Ruutu received a two-minute penalty for charging in the third period of the Canadiens’ 4-0 win Tuesday night. He will forfeit almost $14,000 in salary and will sit out a home-and-home series against the New York Islanders.

The Chicago Blackhawks retired No. 3 in honor of former defensemen Pierre Pilote and Keith Magnuson on Wednesday night before their game against Boston. “I have received several awards and honors in my time, but I am truly humbled by this one,” said the 76-year-old Pilote, the Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s top defenseman in 1963, 1964 and 1965.

Ryan Miller made 30 saves and Tim Connolly, Adam Mair and Henrik Tallinder each had a goal and an assist in the Buffalo Sabres’ 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday night. Alexander Semin had two goals and three assists to move take the NHL scoring lead, and the Washington Capitals routed the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 on Wednesday night to take sole possession of the Southeast Division lead. Alex Ovechkin had a goal and two assists, and Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and three assists for the quick-starting Capitals.

Bob Murray has been hired as general manager of the Anaheim Ducks after Brian Burke declined a contract extension. Murray has spent the last three-plus seasons with the Ducks. They have made the playoffs in each of those seasons, including a Stanley Cup title in 2007. The Ducks also announced Wednesday that Burke has been appointed special consultant to chief executive officer Michael Schulman.

The Columbus Blue Jackets activated goaltender Pascal Leclaire off injured reserve after he missed seven games with an ankle injury. The club announced the move Wednesday. In his place, rookie Steve Mason came up from the minors and won all three games he started. Mason was named the NHL’s No. 2 star for last week.

Heart defects have been found in five players in the Russian ice hockey league since the death of rising star Alexei Cherepanov, an official said Wednesday. Russia’s Continental Hockey League ordered the tests after the 19-year-old Cherepanov collapsed and died last month from a heart condition while playing for his club Avangard.

The Nashville Predators dressed and packed with noticeable speed Tuesday night, slamming sticks and pads into their bags and rushing to the idling team bus. Although many visiting teams at the Shark Tank are eager to get to the airport to beat San Jose’s curfew on late-night flights, the Predators said they were just making a clean getaway after goalie Dan Ellis’ absolute heist of a victory.
