Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists, leading the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Friday night. Kane assisted on goals by defensemen Cam Barker and Brent Sopel. Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien also scored for Chicago, which remained unbeaten in regulation at home (4-0-2). Loui Eriksson and Steve Ott scored for Dallas, which opened a five-game road trip.

The Montreal Canadiens suspended Pavel Valentenko without pay Friday after the prospect left the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs to sign a three-year contract with Dynamo Moscow. Valentenko was in the second year of a three-year, entry-level deal with the Canadiens organization. He signed with Dynamo at the urging of his family, his agent Rolland Hedges said.

Sidney Crosby has an undisclosed injury, and it’s unclear if the Pittsburgh Penguins star will be able to play Saturday night against St. Louis. Crosby left Thursday night’s game at Phoenix with five minutes left in the second period. After the game, a 4-1 loss by the Penguins, he would only say he had “some discomfort.” Penguins spokesman Frank Buonomo would not not elaborate on the injury Friday.

Alex Ovechkin will miss the Washington Capitals’ game at the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. The NHL’s reigning MVP is visiting his ailing grandfather in Russia. Ovechkin also sat out Tuesday’s game, ending his consecutive games streak at 203. Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau says he thinks Ovechkin will be back for practice Monday.

The NHL suspended Columbus Blue Jackets forward Jared Boll for one game Friday because of an instigator penalty in the final minutes of the win against Colorado. Boll will miss the home game Saturday against the Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus general manager Scott Howson said. The Blue Jackets earned a rare 4-2 victory at Colorado on Thursday night.

A strong second-period power play helped the Calgary Flames extend their winning streak on Thursday night. Dion Phaneuf scored the tying goal then set up Mike Cammalleri’s go-ahead goal as Calgary scored twice on the power play in the second period to beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 for its fifth consecutive victory.
